More New River Valley Employers Offer Green and Cost-saving Transportation Benefits to Employees
For Immediate Release, 12/03/2009

Roanoke, VA – Two Blacksburg firms, Draper Aden Associates and Baker Hughes, have partnered with RIDE Solutions to offer environmental- and cost-saving commute options to their employees. These new Workplace Partner participants are working with RIDE Solutions to encourage their employees to carpool, bike, walk, or take the bus to work.

Last year, Virginia experienced a record vote turnout. Independents, Democrats and Republicans voted in large numbers and new voter registrations increased dramatically.

Even changing a single-occupant vehicle commute to a two-person carpool benefits the commuter, employers, and air quality. Employers who participate in the workplace partner program can significantly contribute to cost-savings for their staff, improved air quality, and reduced energy consumption. The benefit to the employer is reduced parking demand, a no-cost employee benefit, and a smaller carbon footprint.

RIDE Solutions is serving over 400 commuters in the New River Valley. Members seeking carpool partners have a 74% match rate. That means they match to at least one other potential carpooler commuting to the same general destination. RIDE Solutions members also commute by bus, walking, and cycling, making them eligible for the Guaranteed Ride Home benefit — a ride home from work in cases of emergency, at any time of day.

Through its Workplace Partner program, RIDE Solutions assists area businesses and organizations with implementing employer-based alternative transportation programs. RIDE Solutions also supports its employer partners with promotional materials, contests, communication plans, bike racks and signage, all free of charge. A complete list of RIDE Solutions Workplaces and more information about the Workplace program can be found at ridesolutions.org/workplace.

RIDE Solutions is a carpool matching and alternative transportation service funded in part by local governments and a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transit. It's a service of the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission – designated a Cool Green Biz by the Roanoke Regional Chamber and a Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists - and the New River Valley Planning District Commission.
