RIDE Solutions Hosts Clean Commute Breakfast May 14th
For Immediate Release, 5/11/2010

Roanoke, Va., May 11th, 2010 – Friday May 7th, the first of the 2010 Clean Commute Challenge, saw 126 commuters in the Roanoke and New River Valley using a clean commute option. They removed nearly 2,000 miles from the road and 2,250 pounds of greenhouse gases.

This Friday, May 14th, RIDE Solutions will host its annual hospitality tent at the Virginia Museum of Transportation from 7:30 until 9:00 AM. We’ll have coffee, provided by Star City Coffee, and a light breakfast for all downtown commuters who bike, carpool, take the bus, or walk into work that morning. Friday May 21st we will host similar hospitality tents in Blacksburg at both the Farmer’s Market and at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center Wikiteria Patio.

Along with the hospitality tents, RIDE Solutions will reward clean commuters with a prize drawing at the end of the month. Prizes include an iPod Touch, a new bicycle courtesy of Cardinal Bicycle, transit passes, gas cards for carpoolers, and more. There is still time for drivers to take the pledge at www.ridesolutions.org/cleancommute or over the phone at 540.342.9393.

Clean Commute Day is one of the air quality initiatives of the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission. May marks the beginning of the traditional ozone pollution season. Ground level ozone – or smog – is the Roanoke Valley’s most significant air quality challenge, and vehicle emissions are a significant contributor to this type of air pollution. Ground-level ozone can lead to and exacerbate a number of health problems, including asthma in children and lung disease in older adults. Tailpipe emissions from passenger vehicles also contribute to nearly a third of greenhouse gasses in the United States.

Clean Commute Day is part of Bike Month in Roanoke. RIDE Solutions and its partners have created a series of events for riders of all ages and skill levels, including a free Bicycle Friendly Business workshop on May 20th and Ciclovia in Downtown Roanoke on May 22nd, and more.
