Regional park and ride lots allow commuters, particularly those who live in rural areas, to park their vehicles at convenient location in order to finish their commute using alternative transportation, such as meeting their carpool partners or catching the SmartWay bus.

Unofficial lots are those that are not maintained by VDOT and are not expressly intended for commuter use. They might be other public spaces, such as parks or recreation centers, or the private lots of shopping centers or other businesses. Where we have noted unofficial lots, it is our understanding that the lot owners have given permission for excess parking capacity to be used by commuters, or that the community has identified the lot as available for park-and-ride use. The status on these lots is subject to change, however, and commuters should always verify that private lots are available for park-and-ride use if not expressly indicated at the lot.
