Valley Metro (Greater Roanoke Transit Company) is the major mass transit provider in the Roanoke area, serving Roanoke City and parts of Salem and Vinton. In addition to their regular fixed-route runs, Valley Metro offers the following shuttle services:
Star Line Trolley: The Star Line Trolley offers free service between the Downtown Roanoke market area and Carilion Roanoke Memorial hospital, with nine stops along the way. Trolleys run every 10 minutes, with additional service during midday that runs every 7 minutes. Visit the website for a map and schedule.
Ferrum Express: The Ferrum Express service is free and runs weekends while Ferrum College is in session. The bus runs between Ferrum and Rocky Mount on Thursdays and Fridays, with stops at the Farmers Market, the Eagle Cinema, the Rocky Mount Wal-Mart, and the bowling alley. Hollins Express: The Hollins Express offers free shuttle service from Hollins University to Center in the Square, with one stop at Valley View Mall, and is available to the general public. Service runs from 4:00 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, and noon to midnight on Saturdays while the University is in session. Visit the website for a map and schedule.
Maroon Express: The Maroon Express also offers shuttle service on Friday nights, Saturday afternoons, and Saturday evenings. Service runs during the normal college schedule, from the Roanoke College main campus, to the Elizabeth Campus, Downtown Roanoke, Logan's Roadhouse, and Valley View Mall, with limited service to the Salem Wal-Mart on Saturdays. SmartWay bus service, provided by Valley Metro, runs between Roanoke and Blacksburg, with stops at the Roanoke Higher Education Center, the Roanoke Valley Municipal Airport, the exits 140 and 118 Park and Ride lots, the Christiansburg K-Mart, Kent Square in Blacksburg and Squires Student Center. The fare is $3.00 one way.

Radford Transit is a joint venture between the City of Radford and Radford University, providing public transit service throughout Radford and into nearby communities, including Fairlawn, Christiansburg and Blacksburg. Professionally operated by New River Valley Community Services, Radford Transit offers convenient routes with stops at a number of key locations in the region, including Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg, Alumni Mall on the Virginia Tech campus, and the Fairlawn Wal-Mart.
ADA deviated fixed route service is available upon request. Fare is $1.00 for a one-way trip. Children under the age of 12 ride free, as do students and faculty of Radford University who present a valid University identification. BT serves the town of Blacksburg, which has approximately 13,000 permanent residents and 26,000 students. They provide both accessible fixed route bus service and door-to-door accessible van service for those needing it throughout Blacksburg. A limited number of BT buses even offer free wireless internet service.

Pulaski Area Transit provides service to the Town of Pulaski and Pulaski County, including service to New River Community College and Fairlawn. The standard fare is $2, with reduced prices in the Town of Pulaski and for Pulaski and Fairlawn NRCC Students. Service runs 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and 9 am to 3 pm on Saturdays. Drivers can make short deviations from the fixed routes in the Town of Pulaski on request. All residents of Pulaski can take advantage of “curb to curb” service, too.

RADAR (Roanoke Area Dial-A-Ride) is a non-profit organization, which has provided rural public transit services primarily in the Greater Roanoke Valley for over 25 years. RADAR's services are aimed at physically, mentally disabled, or transportation disadvantaged individuals. RADAR offers several transportation programs:
STAR: STAR is a service of Valley Metro that is operated by RADAR, to provide transportation to disabled individuals who are unable to ride a Valley Metro bus. The entire City of Roanoke, the town of Vinton, and the city of Salem are service areas. In addition, within 3/4 of one mile on either side of a regular Valley Metro fixed route. Cortran: CORTRAN provides non-fixed-route service to residents of Roanoke County who qualify. To qualify, you must be a Roanoke County resident and be Certified by the County of Roanoke as a senior citizen (60 years or older) or as ADA Paratransit Eligible prior to arranging service. Mountain Express: The Mountain Express is a public bus service in and between Covington and Clifton Forge. The service operates four days a week.
